Miscellaneous
Jewelry: Please leave everything of value at home.
Money Belt: Although China is very safe, it is a good idea to wear a money belt when traveling or when visiting tourist attractions to avoid being targeting by pickpockets. A cotton one is better so that it doesn't get sticky in the hot weather.
Laptop Computer: If you are planning to stay in China for a semester or longer, then you may want to bring your laptop computer. Many of the rooms in the Xi Jiao Hotel in Beijing have a broadband connection to the internet. However, we also have computers and internet access in the lounge, and there is a plethora of internet centers all around our campus.
Flashlight: A small MagLight is a good idea or you can buy one here.
Alarm clock: Classes begin at 8AM!
Power Adapter: 220V AC in China! Not 110 like the States!
Boombox: A portable CD or walkman with headphones/ small speakers is a good idea if you can't live without music in your room. There is a stereo in the lounge and a collection of CDs and tapes if you want to listen to music and do not bring your own equipment. Note: If you like to listen to language tapes then we recommend bringing a walkman.
Reading materials: Limit books to two. Books in English are easy to find and we can trade amongst ourselves. There is also a library of English language novels, resource books, etc. in the lounge for our students to borrow while they are in China.
Photography
Camera: Unless you're planning on being the next Annie Leibowitz or Ansel Adams we suggest the basic PhD camera (Push Here Dummy; in Chinese sha gua for stupid melon camera). Most of these have built in zooms and flashes and don't require changing lenses, flash units, motor drives, filters, tripods, and whatever other contraptions that 99% of us don't need or know how to use anyway! Film is inexpensive to buy here, but black & white and slide film can be difficult to find outside major cities in China. Developing is also very inexpensive in China, though prints can become bulky and negatives hard to protect. You can always buy disposable cameras, but they end up being pricey in the long run.
Video Camera: We leave these decisions to you. Generally speaking, there are some pretty compact video cameras on the market nowadays. However, when you consider tapes, batteries, and recharger (with AC adapter 220V - 110V) you'll end up with quite a load to schlep.
