The Magnificent Jade Buddha |
The Jade Buddha Temple is one of Shanghai's few Buddhist temples as well as one of its most popular tourist destinations, and attracts numerous pilgrims from within China and overseas Chinese. The highlight is the two meter high solid white jade Buddha encrusted with jewels and weighing in at nearly 1000kg or 2200 pounds. The buddha is rumored to have been brought to Shanghai from Myanmar (Burma) via Tibet, and the temple was built around this awesome relic. The grounds are also quite beautiful, and when the crowds aren't bad, very peaceful as well.
